Metroid Dread is the culmination of years and years of work from Nintendo. Metroid’s Yoshio Sakamoto was interested in creating a sequel to Metroid Fusion, which set him down the long and arduous path to Dread. Thankfully, the stars eventually aligned and Metroid Dread came to be in 2021.

Fans knew about the Dread experiments through various leaks over the year, but it was the release of Metroid Prime 3: Corruption that caused the biggest stir. That game included a line that read, “Experiment status report update. Metroid project ‘Dread’ is nearing the final stages of completion,” causing fans to go wild with speculation.

In an episode of the KIWI TALKZ Podcast, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption producer Bryan Walker talked about that situation, and how it led to multiple Metroid fans literally traveling to Retro Studios’ office to try and get details on Dread.

“I honestly lost count how many times we would have people literally showing up at our front door asking what we know about Dread. …Several occasions, we would have people knock on our door who were huge Metroid Prime fans who wanted a tour or who had some questions, wanted to win a bet and so forth. It was fun. Usually, they got to the lobby and that was as far as we could take them.”

You might be thinking what in the world Retro Studios has to do with Dread, as the game was created by Nintendo and MercurySteam. Well, as Retro has stated numerous times, the “Dread” line in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption was nothing more than a coincidence, though some fans still don’t believe that to this day. Walker even stressed that again during this podcast interview.

“Absolutely a coincidence. We’ve said it a million times, and people still refused to believe it. As I’ve said in an interview going way back when, we’re just not that clever, we can’t be that subtle.”

I assumed MercurySteam called the game Metroid Dread as a nod to the reference in Metroid Prime.

Wait, so I can get into the lobby of Retro Studios just by knocking on the door? I drive by their offices all the time, never thought to try that.
