YouTuber sets out to see if Pokémon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire have "too much water"
Water you thinking?!
You never know what’s going to catch on and become part of internet lore. There are certain things that catch the attention of the internet’s eye and take on a life of their own. On the gaming side of things, one of those unforgettable moments was IGN’s review of Pokémon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire.
IGN’s original review of Pokémon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire has become a timeless meme since it first released. While plenty of people took issue with the review in general, it was the positives/negatives breakdown at the end that drove people nuts. In particular, it was the mention of “too much water” in the negatives section that gamers found downright baffling, instantly propelling the review to meme status.
The “too much water” meme is still referenced to this day, with gamers making comparisons to the infamous snippet whenever IGN shares other controversial reviews. But the question is…does IGN’s complaint actually hold water? Well, now we have our answer…or as close to one as we can get.
YouTuber Ackolade has taken a deep dive into Pokémon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire to see just how much water is in the game, as compared to the original titles. Here’s some of the water-related stats that were discovered:
- Hoenn trainer battles are generally more reliant on Water Type Pokémon
- 38.4% of all Trainers in Ruby have at least one Water Type on their team
- 43.9% of all Trainers in Sapphire have at least one Water Type on their team
- you are 171% more likely to find a Hoenn Trainer weak to Water
- OR/AS increases the Water Type encounter rates on early game routes
- water-based routes like 124 and 126 are, in fact, smaller in the remakes
Based on those details, it does seem that OR/AS is considerably wetter than the original titles, but as to whether there’s “too much water,” well…that’s up to you to decide.
