Here’s something we don’t often see. An upcoming Switch game has been refused official release in North America and Europe, but it will launch on the Japanese Switch eShop.

The bullet hell shooter Redneg Allstars Swing-By Edition is coming to Switch, but only in Japan. According to the developer, the game has been refused an official eShop listing/release in Europe and North America due to “expression restrictions.” Unfortunately, we don’t have more specific info on why the game was refused classification outside of Japan.

Speculation on the game’s lack of worldwide classification points to two different possibilities. First up, while the game doesn’t have nudity, it does have some character designs that are over-exaggerated in a few specific areas. Along with that, the game’s Steam release says the title has “elements associated with drug abuse.” Again, this is all speculation as to why the game won’t get an official worldwide release, but you can always hop on the Japanese eShop and snag a copy no matter where you live.

What a shame. These games are really good shmups. I believe that the new Prison Princess sequel was also denied release on the Switch outside of Japan for the same reason. Seems that Nintendo is no longer allowing more risqué games on the Switch in the west.

What does Nintendo have to do with ratings?

It's not the rating that prevented it. It was the platform holder that refused it.

No. The article literally says it was refused ratings classification.

No platform holder allows unrated games on their storefront aside from Steam.
